Today the Church celebrates the Feast Day of St. Luke the Evangelist, the author of the gospel bearing his name and the book of Acts. Luke is known as a physician , but also a missionary who traveled with the Apostle Paul on his missionary journeys. As we honor the legacy of St. Luke today, let us remember to pray for and thank the Lord for the men and women who serve in the medical industry. These professionals work tirelessly to bring healing and hope to their patients, through hand of the Healer our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us also remember to pray for those who serve as missionaries here in America and around the world. Use the collect (prayer) of the day below and the Bible reading selection in your devotional time today, as you reflect on the legacy of St. Luke the Evangelist.
Collect (Prayer) of the Day
Almighty God, you called your servant Luke to be an evangelist and physician of the soul: Grant that, by the wholesome medicine of the doctrine he taught, all diseases of our souls may be healed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (taken from the ACNA Book of Common Prayer, 2019)
Bible Reading
Luke 1:1-4 (ESV)
Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.
Acts 1:1-3
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
