Growing up in a non-liturgical context, I had never heard of the Feast of the Holy Innocents. Even though there is a small reference to the event in the Gospels, the day serves as a reminder to us of God’s love and justice. The Feast Day of the Holy Innocents, commemorated on December 28th, honors the young children who lost their lives in Bethlehem as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew. King Herod, fearing the prophecy of a newborn king, ordered the massacre of all male infants two years old and younger. This tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the vulnerability of the innocent and the depths of human cruelty.
The story of the Holy Innocents challenges us to reflect on the sanctity of innocent lives. These young children, full of potential and devoid of malice, became victims of fear and political maneuvering. Their innocence stands in stark contrast to the darkness of Herod’s actions, highlighting the fragility of purity in a world often marred by injustice and violence.
In our modern society, the innocence represented by these children can be seen in various forms—whether it’s the untainted perspectives of youth, the trust we place in one another, or the inherent goodness that exists despite adversity. Their memory calls us to cherish and protect what is pure and unblemished.
Protect the Vulnerable:
Just as Herod targeted the most defenseless, we must be vigilant in safeguarding those who cannot protect themselves. This includes children, marginalized communities, and individuals facing injustice.
Combat Injustice:
In a world where power can be misused, standing against oppression and advocating for fairness becomes a moral imperative. Let us challenge systems that perpetuate inequality and work towards a society rooted in compassion and equity.
Preserve Innocence:
In our pursuit of progress, it’s essential to maintain the innocence that fuels creativity, hope, and love. Encourage environments where individuals can grow without the burden of cynicism or fear.
Practice Compassion:
Recognize the pain and suffering caused by unjust actions. Offer support, understanding, and kindness to those affected by violence and loss.
As we remember the Holy Innocents, let us commit to embodying the values they represent. Act justly in your daily interactions, love mercy in your decisions, and walk humbly with God in your journey. By doing so, we honor their memory and contribute to a world where innocence is cherished and protected.
Collect (Prayer) of the Day
Heavenly Father, we remember the innocent lives lost on Holy Innocents Day and are reminded of the preciousness of every soul. Grant us the strength to stand against injustice, the courage to protect the vulnerable, and the wisdom to foster a world filled with compassion and love. May we honor these young souls by living lives that reflect Your grace and mercy. Amen.
Bible Reading
Micah 6:8 (ESV)
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Matthew 2:16-18 (ESV)
Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:“ A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”
