Now more than ever, it seems, that it is imperative for Christians to be grounded in the knowledge of the truths of Scripture. Even as the culture is pressing in around followers of Christ. It is important to remember This is not the first time in church history that this has occurred. For more than two centuries followers of Christ have lived out their faith in the midst of varying hardships. This does not mean, however, that it is not important to be grounded in the faith. To the contrary, it is crucial for all believers to know what they believe and why they believe it. For this reason, Christian parents are called to disciple their children in the gospel (Psalm 78). Yet, this task can seem daunting at times given the varying demands of a modern society. For this reason, it is wise for Christian parents to utilize resources that are saturated with the truth of God‘s word for which they can teach their children in the home. Once such resource, is the new devotional book published by Crossway titled Unfolding Grace for Kids: A 40-Day Journey through the Bible (2021).
This edition is a follow up to Crossway’s bestselling devotional Unfolding Grace: A 40-Day Journey through the Bible (2020). Intended to be a resource for children 8-12, the book can also be beneficial for families of younger children to use as a family devotion. As with the previous edition, it is comprised of 40 selected Scripture readings that combined tell the full narrative of God redeeming his people. The book also includes brief commentary by Drew Hunter introducing each Scripture reading as well as illustrations by Peter Voth. It is also a very aesthetically appealing book that is hardcover and has thicker, quality paper. This attention to detail makes for a resource that can be used to years to come and even passed down to another generation.
Unfolding Grace For Kids is a very great resource that is well done. This is a devotional that could easily be one tradition for families for years to come. It would be the perfect resource for Lent for families or individual children to read for the 40 days leading up to Easter. It does a great job of providing an overarching theme of the Bible, which can be confusing to children. Many times children grow up to view the Bible as a hodgepodge of stories that don’t make coherent sense. Unfolding Grace For Kids allows the storyline of the Bible to be read in smaller portions so as to see the full narrative of God‘s word as revealed throughout the Bible.
I would highly recommend Unfolding Grace For Kids. It is the perfect resource for parents to lead their family in family devotion. I am thankful for Crossway for issuing such a resource for families. It is not only beneficial as a family devotional, it is also a perfect resource for older children as a way to introduce them to the storyline of the Bible in a way that that is not overwhelming for a young reader. This devotional is a must have edition for the library of every Christian family who are serious about raising their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
Editor’s Note: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
